Review of APC P1T 120V Portable Surge Protector

September 26, 2010

I bought one of these after seeing them in the APC catalog.

It’s a handy thing: LEDs let you know if the ground is working
as well as if the surge arrest is functioning.

The only thing that could be improved is that it’s a Wart and
takes up about as much space as a transformer; this becomes
an issue if sharing a plug with someone else at the coffee
shop.

APC makes good stuff and the $25k warranty is nice as well.

Review of APC BP500UC 7-Outlet Back-UPS Pro 500 Uninterruptable Power Supply (315 Watts)

August 26, 2010

I have owned one of these UPS’s for about 3 years.Earlier this year the alarms went off indicating that the battery needed replacement.I thought that was odd considering the age of the unit.No problem though,I’ll just log onto APC’s website and order a replacement battery.Wasn’t I surprised to see that APC indicates that this model doesn’t have a replacable battery. This didn’t make much sense to me since the unit has an access door to the battery compartment.

Well,I removed the battery and found a web vendor that had a replacement for $18.It is a very common 12volt cell and was available from several vendors. The unit is back up and working well again.

I have experienced several black-outs in the past few years and this UPS can keep my CPU, 19″ monitor, cable modem & network switch operable for enough time to save any work in progress and shut down my system.

In closing, it is a well designed unit with adequate power for most home or small office systems. But I was a little put off by the short life of the original battery and incorrect replacement information listed by APC.

Review of Battery Pack for Smart-ups 24v Black

August 16, 2010

This battery pack boosts back up time substantially. The documentation that comes with the battery pack says that you should use the included 3.5″ “floppy” disk to load a MS-DOS (pre-Windows)program to tell your XL series UPS that it has an additional battery pack attached.I had no computer with a floppy disk drive and have not used MS DOS since the 1980’s.APC support directed me to a FTP Internet download version of the MS DOS program. What I discoverd on my own is that the Business Edition of the UPS Powerchute that comes with XL series UPS’s has the ability to set the number of battery packs. Why hide the best method of configuring the battery pack and force customers to use an ancient process to do the same thing?

Product Description
APC Smart-UPS XL protects your data by supplying reliable, network-grade power with scalable run-time in tower and rack mount form factors. With optional, matching battery packs, run-time can be easily extended and optimized for the application. APC understands long run-time requirements, so Smart-UPS XLs can be configured with up to 10 additional battery packs – for run-times exceeding 24 hours, if necessary.

Review of APC SUA1000XL Smart-UPS XL 1000 VA 120 V UPS with USB and Serial Interface

July 30, 2010

This product is woefully under-appreciated, and often overshadowed by APC’s “non-XL” Smart-UPS models. (For example, the popular Smart-UPS 1500VA, model SUA1500.) The non-XL Smart-UPS models are great products, but they lack one key feature of the XLs: expandable battery capacity.

Said expandability allows one to daisy-chain up to 10 (!!!) external battery packs — model SUA24XLBP, product name “Battery Pack for Smart-ups 24v Black” — providing an amazing amount of potential runtime!

Beyond the expandable battery capacity, the Smart-UPS XL series has all of the same features — and the same outstanding power filtering/protection — as the non-XL Smart-UPS models. That includes “line-interactive” operation, which provides true Sine Wave output — and virtually no delay when switching to backup power. Another notable feature: the Smart-UPS XL series can be used when running on power provided by a backup generator. Inexpensive UPS models cannot!

And finally, there is an important thing to know relative to the load capacity of the Smart-UPS XL 1000VA. While this product is rated as providing 1,000 VA (volt-amps) of output power, the “real” capacity is 800 Watts. By comparison, the non-XL-series Smart-UPS 1500VA has a capacity of 980 Watts. The point? The Smart-UPS 1500VA does not have 50% more load capacity as you might expect. And the Smart-UPS XL 1000VA is darn close!

The bottom line? You cannot get better power protection — or more expandability — without paying significantly more!

Product Description
Smart-UPS protects your data by supplying network-grade battery backup when power fails. With PowerChute plus software the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) will safely store data and shut down your network operating system before the battery is fully discharged, whether you?re there or not. SmartSlot internal accessory slot allows you to install optional accessories to enhance the performance of your UPS. APC Smart-UPS is the perfect UPS for fileservers, minicomputers, UNIX CPU?s, internet hubs, telecommunications systems and other mission-critical applications.Smart-UPS XL models (Smart-UPS models with XL extensions in their names and part numbers) allow for expanding runtime by simply plugging in additional battery packs.

Just like the “everything” computer AC cable, only longer, and thicker.

Who says size doesn’t matter?

Review of APC Back-UPS RS 800VA – UPS – 800 VA – UPS battery – lead acid ( BR800BLK )

June 5, 2010

This APC gives me 37 minutes of battery run time after a power failure.I have a Dell OptiPlex desktop computer, 19″ Dell CRT monitor, cable modem, Vonage VOIP phone/network device and cordless handset connected to the battery supported sockets (add a power strip to extend number of battery supported sockets to run your very low wattage items).I bought this when priced at $79.95 plus $22.00 shipping. So, as I see it, this unit cost me at most $2.75 per minute of battery time. But, every time it is called into use, my cost of ownership goes down.It is worth every penny for the luxury of being connected to the Internet and Vonage service during power outages.Of course, I do not stay up and running the whole time, but power down my computer and monitor to conserve battery. The more things you connect to your APC, the more watts are consumed.I really need to upgrade to a flat panel monitor, less watts to operate.I live in Northern Virginia and we just had a power outage lasting half the day. This APC safely shutdown my computer, but kept power to my cable modem and Vonage voice service so I could use my phone.Remember, you have to provide battery power to ALL the hardware supporting your Internet connection and VOIP phone system. No matter what size of APC you buy, you will be glad you have one when the power goes out.Remember, you can also charge your cell phone, plug-in your radio, electric shaver, and other low wattage devices to take advantage of this device.Plus you get all the other benefits of having a surge protector and clean electrical power source for your expensive computer and network gear.P.S.I bought another one of these to replace my wife’s aging APC Backups 280 Pro; glad I did, because the Amazon price went up and winter ice storms are coming.Look on eBay, I found a brand new one the other day for $85.
